Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations Management
(Black CSCS Card)
The Construction Contracting Operations Management NVQ Level 6 is a work-based qualification for experienced construction professionals working at a senior or managerial level. It is also an ideal route for experienced professionals who previously held CSCS Industry Accreditation (often referred to as “Grandfather Rights”) and want to gain a recognised qualification to support their career progression and CSCS requirements.
The qualification is suitable for a range of construction contracting and commercial roles, including:
- Construction Managers
- Site and Project Managers

- Quantity Surveyors
- Construction Buyers
- Construction Planners
- Surveyors
Candidates can use their existing skills, knowledge and competence gained through their current role and workplace activities. In addition, units can be selected to reflect individual responsibilities and the candidate’s area of construction contracting operations management.
The qualification can cover areas including planning and programming, procurement and tendering, contract work and progress, surveys, commercial activities, health and safety, and managing teams and working relationships.
Successful completion provides a recognised Level 6 qualification and can support an application for the Black CSCS Manager Card, subject to meeting the relevant CSCS requirements.
The qualification is also recognised by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and may support progression towards Chartered Membership, subject to meeting CIOB’s membership requirements and successfully completing the relevant Professional Review.
How the NVQ is Assessed
Our Level 6 NVQ assessment process is designed to be straightforward and flexible, with no written assignments or written work for candidates to complete.
Your knowledge and understanding are captured through recorded professional discussions with your assessor. Rather than completing lengthy written questions, assignments or reports, you discuss your knowledge and experience with your assessor, who will guide you through the process and ensure the required knowledge and understanding are fully evidenced.
We also do not provide candidates with an e-portfolio or online platform to manage themselves. Instead, your assessor oversees the portfolio-building process, selecting and organising the evidence required for your qualification and guiding you throughout the NVQ.
Evidence can be gathered from your existing work and professional responsibilities, including documents, e-systems, reports, programmes and other relevant workplace evidence. Where appropriate, your assessor may also visit you in the workplace to carry out face-to-face assessment activities. However, the qualification can be completed remotely where suitable evidence can be obtained.
Third-party references and witness testimonies may also be used to support and confirm your competence and areas of responsibility.
This approach allows you to demonstrate your existing knowledge, skills and experience without completing written assignments or managing an online portfolio yourself.
How Long Does the NVQ Take?
There is no set duration for completing our NVQs. The timeframe varies from candidate to candidate and depends on their existing skills, experience, job role, the evidence available to demonstrate competence and, importantly, their own willingness and commitment to engage with the assessment process.
As NVQs assess existing workplace competence, experienced and committed candidates may be able to complete the qualification more quickly where they can readily demonstrate the required skills, knowledge and evidence. Your assessor will agree an appropriate assessment plan with you based on your individual circumstances, availability and progress.
Cost
The standard cost of the Level 6 NVQ is £1,700 plus VAT at the prevailing rate. Companies registered with CITB may be eligible to claim grant funding upon successful completion of the qualification.
